Hello to all Pier 3 members,

last year there was an attempt to make a 2x2 mosaic of the Andromeda Galaxy. Unfortunately we did not manage to do this one. Only one panel could be completed. The other three panels were always missing at least one color channel. I would like to complete this mosaic this year. However, I am not sure if we have gotten any new members since then.

Therefore I wanted to ask for your opinion. Would you rather start the mosaic all over again or is it enough if we only include the missing color channels? We also have to remember that the camera was working in 2x2 binning mode at the time. Now it works in 1x1 binning. I don't know if it is possible to combine the data well.

Hello Darius,

I'm fairly sure that there are new member so to get their votes it would need to be restarted.

You have my vote in the meantime, however, a I think that a 3x3 might make a better composition. Obviously the overhead of 5 additional panes might be too high a price in total integration time. Just a thought.

Cheers and CS,

Hello Ray,

I also like the idea of a 3x3 mosaic. The original mosaic was intended with 5 hours exposure time per panel. That would cost 45 hours of exposure time for a 3x3 mosaic. I think we can do that since the galaxy is just coming and will be visible for many months.

If all members agree with a 3x3 mosaic, I would submit it.

Hi,

I have some concerns about this project. The 4 panel mosaic was submitted at about the same time last year and wasn't completed. Quite a lot of other projects also weren't completed. It's not a criticism of anyone but the autumn is storm season on the North Atlantic and so the number of sessions can be more limited than expected.

Whether a member will be able to access the lights depends on when they join; for example, I have three of the incomplete panels from last year; I  joined after the first was completed and, if we start again, it is likely that my membership will lapse before it is finished. I'm not really personalizing it; it is the same for anyone who joins.

Some time ago I suggested that panels for large mosaics should remain available to members who were involved when the  project was started but this hasn't raised any interest.

If we want to do this we probably need to ask for it to be prioritized as far as possible so that we don't end up with another set of wasted photons. I agree that 9 panels makes more sense than 4.

Hi Earle,

I agree with your concerns. I can think of two possible solutions. If we want to do the 3x3 mosaic, we could shorten the exposure time to 2.5 hours per panel. That would only give us a total exposure time of 22.5 hours. Or I could make the data collected so far available to all P3 members on a cloud storage and we finish the 2x2 mosaic. That way we don't have to throw away the old data and we have more time for other projects this year.

Hi Darius

I am of two minds here. Probably many of us have M31 images taken with wider field scopes.

What makes the 3x3 project attractive is the resolution of the system (0.7 "/px at 1x1 binning) The 3x3 gives better coverage of the galaxy. I guess your 2.5 h/panel is 30 m RGB and 60 L, which will work if the subs are good.

We could simply add what is missing  from the previous project. From what I have, 1755 (Panel 2) has LRGB, 1756  LRG and 1757 LR, so only three sets are missing, 2xB and 1xG. I don't have 1754. If we can share these with other members (?) we could finish the earlier project.

A suggestion would be to complete the earlier 2x2 project but add Ha to bring out the star forming regions. Given what is already done, this might be the most effective option.

Thoughts?

Anyone else have inputs?

CS, Earle

Hi Earle,

I really like your suggestion to finish the 2x2 mosaic and add Ha. I have all the old datasets from the mosaic. I can make them available on a cloud storage in case some members do not have the data.

Hi Darius,

I'm certainly happy to go with this.

I'm not familiar with the way that we can communicate within the consortium. Is there a way to bounce the idea past the others? (Do we even know who is in the consortium?)

Kind regards, Earle

Hi Earle,

I would post the links in this chat. Then all members should see it. Maybe the Roboscopes team would be kind enough to upload the files to their server:)

Hi Daraius,

I see that Ray gave a thumbs up to the suggestion of completing the four panel Andromeda with Ha. Why don't we just do that.

Do you wan to upload the requests? I can but need the coordinates for pane 1.

By thee way, have you checked the existing data to see if any needs repeating? I didn't becaus I only had partial data.

Hi Earle,

you can see the coordinates in the syndicate submissions list. I already have the coordinates figured out and will attach them as a screenshot to this reply. I will upload the old datasets in the course of next week. To save space on the cloud storage, I will check all datasets before uploading and sort out the bad subs and upload only the good ones. Once all datasets are uploaded, I will provide the links in this chat.

Hi Darius,

Of course the coordinates are there; I hadn't thought of that. I've gone through plates 2,3 and 4 to check the quality; The green and red on plate 3 are poor and there are some missing sets.

What do you think about Ha exposures? The RGB are 60x60s; would 30x180s sound reasonable?

Hi Earle,

30x180s for Ha sounds good to me. I am in the process of uploading the old datasets. As you mentioned, the red channel for panel 3 is bad. I left it in the dataset anyway because I am unsure if you can use it. Nevertheless, I think we should retake the red channel for Panel 3.

Hello all,
I have uploaded all datasets from the M31 Mosaic.

Panel 1: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vic9jws4f1ktysp/1754%20p3%20m31%201%20833.zip?dl=0

Panel 1 (red channel): https://www.dropbox.com/s/nzc4kcoo83qgmiy/1898%20p3%20m31%201%20red%20833.zip?dl=0

Panel 2: https://www.dropbox.com/s/febsxppmuhyjzyv/1755%20p3%20m31%202%20833.zip?dl=0

Panel 3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cj6gztp99bfoj8z/1756%20p3%20m31%203%20833.zip?dl=0

Panel 4: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8cy0tudni81hjl2/1757%20p3%20m31%204%20833.zip?dl=0

I have already sorted out the bad subs. Panel 3 had a lot of bad subs in it. Some of them I wasn't sure if you can still use them. You'll have to look through them yourself and decide which ones you want to use.

I would include the following additional data for the Mosaic:

Panel 1: 30x180s Ha
Panel 2: 30x60s Blue, 60x60s red, 30x180 Ha
Panel 3: 60x60s Red, Green, Blue, 30x180s Ha
Panel 4: 60x60s Blue and Green, 30x180s Ha

What is your opinion?

Hi Darius,

That's fantastic and thank you for the effort you have put in on this. Between yourself and Earle I think you've come up with the best solution. Looking forward to this.

Cheers and CS,

Hi everyone

The requests for the M31 project have been uploaded (only got 2 of the 4 wrong first time).

Do we still M31 submissions 2213, 2214, and 2217?

Luminance is looking pretty good. There is one different panel missing from each of the RGB_Ha channels.

Some one I am still missing one panel in each color channel. Maybe I discarded too many bad subs. Just to verify are all the panels available?

And I have downloaded the subs Dark Astro shared through dropbox.

Hello Daniel,
Sorry for the late reply. I had a lot to do in the last days. These are all the datasets for the M31 mosaic that I have. Which ones are you missing?

PS: I just submitted an additional job, because the position of the additional data for panel 4 does not match the original data.
