As you know 35mm chip and 3.6un pixels are a big ask for any telescope, also after keeping an eye on things over the winter and spring galaxy season I think I would like to run a suggestion by you :)

Remove the reducer and use at native F5

Pro's

  • Smaller FOV so more adaptable across more of the year (galaxy season etc)

  • Better sampling rate

  • Sharper stars to the corners

Neg's

  • Slower data collection, although in my opinion you will hardly notice any difference due to the sensor that's fitted and 300s will still be the longest sub needed.

  • Smaller FOV for the big summer nebula season

Please come back to me with your thoughts on this, as I said this is me thinking out loud more than anything but I feel the scope was under utilised throughout the Spring season due to the type of objects available, Perhaps this is a good way of giving it a better all season appeal with very little I can see on the negative side of the scales ?

Thanks Ray for your usual thorough analysis of the jobs.

I agree with all your suggestions. Particular priorities for me are Jobs 1016 and 026. I will re-do the Heart and Soul after the changes, as the first run had the wrong camera angles in. It worked OK, but we can do better. Many jobs we can re-do later, but your Rho Ophiuchus jobs (1017 & 1018) are limited to high summer and should be prioritised.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for the confirmations and I'm in total agreement with those 2 particular jobs 026 and 1016 you mentioned. Less than 2 hours needed for The Elephant Trunk, 026, and without 1016 we will not be able to get that 3 panel mosaic of the North American nebula.

Being a rather pernickety so and so I had submitted the jobs 1007, 1008 and 1025 to hopefully get a few additional subs for that mosaic, to make up for some less than ideal ones we have. As I said, I'm rather fussy. :) The submission 1008 is for the original slightly misaligned left panel Sh 2-119, so not strictly needed but is just 1.5 hours. When we get the data for 1016 back I'll do my usual run through and submit a job for any additional subs I think will help.

Dear Roboscopes team,

I realise that it is not possible to have the imaging algorithm carry these submissions out in an exact sequence, but it would help if a few that have just been put in the joblist were removed. Sorry guys for any inconvenience. If that would require us to resubmit these after the visit, then I'd be happy to re-enter them then using the coordinates Richard used.

For temporary removal from the joblist :

1019, 1022, 1023 and 1024. These are for the Sadr mega mosaic.

With those removed it ought to be possible to get the rest completed. :)

Sorry but that should have been it, however, I noticed something on this morning's list which is a bit puzzling. Since it says that a very small amount of time was given to the Soul nebula last night, job 1000, I can only conclude that the imaging software is set to allow imaging to take place slightly below the 25 degree elevation. I've no issue with that as it's helpful for low targets. Given what Richard says in his post and the need to resubmit the Heart and Soul mosaic, ideally 999 and 1000 to be removed, but not before Richard agrees. If either remain then there is the possibility they will occasionally be given imaging time.

Sorry gentlemen for any inconvenience these changes may cause you.

Cheers,

Ray (aka by those who know him as pita)

Hi Ray,

I think we can just disable them in the job queue for now if thats the case and just resume them whenever.

I will let Steve or Pete confirm this

Phil,

We can do that, but it depends on the angle of the camera after adjustments. We were caught out before because we did not realise the camera angle changed the last time adjustments were made.

Thanks Phil,

That would be great.

As Richard just mentioned we probably will need to replace those submissions if the camera angle gets changed when fitting the new adaptor, but I'm more than happy to do that if required. Hope all is well guys, and really looking forward to completing what would be my first ever 3 panel mosaic.

Cheers,

Ray

If the adjustment is done while we're in Spain and as it's me doing it rather than the Spanish lads, then the camera will 1000% go back to true vertical position

However its a IF, until I have confirmation from yourselves. Although if I am honest I really would like to get it done while I am there :) I would if you decide need an easy to follow list of what needs pausing so I don't make any mistakes!

As a personal note sort of thing...Honestly lads the way Covid is going again I doubt we will get another chance to do this trip again this year, we have even brought the trip forward to the 13th just so we beat Mrs Boris and his announcements on the 14th because who knows how this one will pan out. We may even go back to closed borders!

So if we can wangle stuff round and finish some jobs then my advice is get it done in case we are stuck closed down for another 6 months :(

Thanks Steve,

That's all good to know. A truly vertical camera alignment would be fantastic. :)

Provided that we get a few more clear nights we should get all we need finished by the time you leave. Any spare time I think would be best spent capturing the odd additional sub or two for what we've already captured, rather than start anything new. We'll keep an eye on things. So hopefully you'll be able to stop it whenever you want to.

I cannot say I blame you to make this the final trip this year. Really appreciate all your efforts in keeping things running, which has not been easy at all with the restrictions. Assuming that you are taking the ferry to Spain, hope the seas are calm. We've been having some unusual weather conditions lately so I trust the crew will post a look out for icebergs.

Cheers,
Ray

Good morning,

It would really help if all the following submissions in the current joblist were removed, or, disabled to allow us to strictly control the imaging over the next couple of weeks.

One submission 001009 appears to have completed, so excluding that one, there are 23 items in the list.

For removal or disabling :-
001008 NGC7000. (Replacement subs now not needed)
001019 This plus next three are the Sadr region
001022
001023
001024
coor 00991 The rest ought not to be current, but 01000 (soul nebula) was recently captured
coor 00992
coor 00993
coor 00994
coor 00995
coor 00999 Heart nebula
coor 01000 Soul nebula
coor 128
coor 830

This should leave 9 active jobs for us to monitor daily, plus 001009 just completed

001007 ngc7000 (replacement subs for middle panel)
001010 ngc7822
001016 coor 961 (replacement entire left panel for ngc7000 mosaic)
001017 Rho 1
001018 Rho 2
001025 Ic5070 (replacement subs for right panel ngc7000) Ic5070 is Pelican
coor 024 Flying Bat nebula
coor 025 Veil nebula
coor 026 Elephant trunk nebula

We can review this in about a week and see if any more need removing. For example, my submission 001010, and maybe coor 025 The Veil. This will leave Steve free to tackle pier 14 whenever he is able to, without needing to wait for anything.

As mentioned in an earlier post, once those have been completed we can gather some extra subs for what we already have. You cannot have enough data?

Sorry for taking up so much of your time over this. Just off out now so please don't expect any immediate response to any questions you may have.

Cheers,

Ray

Good morning,

Really good progress so far, and looking at the joblist this morning there appears to be only two targets awaiting completion.

025 The Veil complex is nearly half completed, and 1016 Sh2-119 is at 7.1%.

Both of these are currently rising and do so around the same time. With maybe up to around 4 hours net imaging time available each night, we should leave things as they are for at least the next couple of days. Will keep an eye on the situation to try and ensure no time is wasted.

Cheers,

Ray

I would be surprised if they are not finished in the next 2 nights or even 1, so it may be worth worth getting ready to put a couple of single jobs in if the weather allows

We are travelling on the 13th and arrive late on the 14th and I will let you know when P14 is taken off line as itshaving the new adapter fitted and being moved to the centre position in the observatory as it gives easier access to the lower horizons. With some of the new big scopes being fitted, I fear we may get a little southern horizon blockage in its current position so just being pre-emptive with travel restrictions. The old adage of prevention is better.....

I reckon 2/4 jobs will be enough so get your thinking caps on :)

I have submitted two short jobs (1026 and 1027) to add additional O3 and S2 to the Elephant's Trunk and the Veil complex (these were still on equal exposure times for each filter). I would rather strengthen what we have than start any new projects in the next few days.

Each job 180 mins exposure.

I agree that's what we should do rather than start anything new. When we get the Flying Bat data back then Richard can see if some additional oxygen data is needed for the 'Squid'. But probably best to leave that until 1016 is completed as well.

Looks like just 2 jobs to complete and hopefully these will this evening. They are, the re-submission of Sh2-119 left panel of mosaic, plus 1027 which I believe is additional oxygen and sulphur data for the Elephant Trunk.

Once those have completed may I suggest that additional /replacement data be submitted for what we already have just as Richard suggested, and no new objects. There are a few completed targets which may require additional data but as yet we don't yet know what.

So I'd suggest waiting until tomorrow before submitting anything else. Any comments?

My only comment is submit them earlier rather than later then please, as we are packing and getting everything ready for Spain and it gives Pete time to input them between everything else

I have added a new job (1028) to double the amount of O3 in the Flying Bat/Squid Nebulas (SH2-129) to help bring out the Squid. An additional 5 hours. It reaches 30 degrees around 23:00.

Ok, so the forecast is not so bad until Tuesday and the pier jobs list is Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard at present.

May I suggest a couple of targets go in this evening chaps as after this evening Myself or Pete will not be on hand to input them I am afraid and that means P14 will snooze for almost 5 days

As a suggestion, either 4x quickies or 2x decent projects. Your choice however :0

Steve

Ps if you do decide to put some in could you be early rather than late. I may also ask Mike Van den Berg if he can join the thread and add a couple if you wish seeing as I am sure I can nudge him to be more active in target acquisition :)

Have been out most of the day so only just saw this.
Please do not consider me a nag, but we are still in the situation where the last panel of the mosaic has not completed and we do not have data back yet for the jobs where I have requested replacement subs.

The best solution I can come up with is to submit several jobs to add additional data to those we have already in case we need them. You can never have enough data.

Will submit jobs in the next couple of hours if that is OK.
