Hi all, as per title pier-2 is back online and is looking super awesome:)

  • Its currently binning 1x1  (0.47"/px) so members can software bin to suit themselves in post processing
  • its also capable of doing 180 seconds unguided which is perfect for broadband imaging (LRGB) as its more productive per hour so try to keep maximum LRGB subs to 180s to get the most out of the piers productivity

Some suggestions for Pier-2 moving forward from today

Suggestion A

  1. Deleting all legacy jobs from the old PC and members re-inputting as required
  2. Evolving to RGB weighted imaging and not using luminance - see current discussion on the forum re this topic
  3. Implementing a weighted system for Hubble narrowband imaging*
  4. maximum job length without putting the suggestion to other members first, would be 20 hours in both Broad & Narrowband

* For Hubble palette objects we use the sub ratio;

  • HA = 1
  • OIII = 1.5
  • SII = 2

With the majority of Hubble palette objects it will give a far better balance meaning post processing will be easier and save wasted time taking to much HA data in the first place. Its not an exact ratio by any means buts its far closer to what's required for a quality dataset than how members are currently inputting narrowband jobs.

Obviously for planetary nebula and non standard narrowband subjects this suggestion would not apply!

Suggestion B

No member signed up for this in the first place so I am separating it from suggestion A. This would be the Roboscopes team plus new admin members running the software and imaging suggestions to increase productivity, decrease repetivity, and add some more unusual items into the data being acquired. between us we have a wealth of experience and knowledge that we can bring to the table in getting the most from a pier and object selection

Members will still be able to suggest objects they wish to image but the team would run the pier in the hope of a more productive syndicate throughout the year for all members now and future :)

So, I have added a poll at the bottom to see what you think of our ideas, we also welcome your verbal input and suggestions as we truly want the best from the syndicate for all members!

Clear skies

Hi Steve & team,

Very happy you got the pier up and running again so quickly - thank you for your efforts :)

1) A bit nervous about 180s subs, as f6.8 is not as fast as the other piers and the individual subs are rather faint at this exposure length, but happy to stick to this if your experience is that acquiring more unguided 180s subs (rather than fewer guided 300s subs currently being requested) would still result in fainter details being captured in the final stack.

2) RGB weighted without luminance is definitely the way forward!

3) The "Hubble Ratio" you described above is very interesting - we'll use that for all NB submissions.

4) Feel free to add to the queue whenever you like.  Hopefully the selection currently submitted offers a nice and varied selection of interesting objects?  But of course will only benefit from your experienced input :)

Hi Mike

1, Yeah, the 180 RGB is not a hard and fast rule, its for standard brighter objects really, things like dark nebs, dim objects & IFN etc will always break this rule obviously, We will simply add the extra time for objects that need it

2, glad you agree

3, The Hubble ratio on the whole works for most objects that are in Hubble palette obviously but it can also work with some dual band imaging (HA OIII) also, simply because the HA signal is just so strong in most cases compared to the other bands

4, Now its back up I will let it settle for a couple of weeks and start imaging to see how it performs :)
