Since the season is almost over for Orion and we will not be able to take data again until next winter, I have processed the data we have already collected. Due to clouds, I unfortunately had to delete many subs in some panels. As you can see it was still enough for a good result. This is my version of Orion Mosaic.

Hello Darius,

That's excellent in every way possible. All the objects including ldn1622 near the bottom left corner are easily recognisable, the stars look fabulous and there's no obvious distinction between panels to indicate that some had more data than others. When you say that it was 'good' enough to share, you are being very modest.

To be able to match just one of those many panels would require a lot of effort from me let alone all of them. Then creating a seamless looking mosaic, it's exhausting just thinking about it.

I'm assuming that you created the mosaic using pixinsight, so if you wouldn't mind answering, how much RAM in the computer you used?

Cheers and CS,

Hello Ray,
thank you very much for your kind words. I did not use Pixinsight for this image. I stacked it in AstroPixelProcessor and post-processed it in Photoshop. I find it easier to stack such large mosaics with AstroPixelProcessor than in Pixinsight. My computer has 32GB Ram.

Hello Darius,

Those positive comments I posted are so well deserved.

Thanks for replying on what you used. I too now use APP for any large mosaics, and I agree with you that it's much better and easier to use. It was Manuel who persuaded me to try APP after pixinsight kept hanging without any notification being given. It is only by monitoring the RAM that you can actually confirm that it's a memory issue.

If anyone is attempting this with only 16gb and pixinsight hangs, try downsampling the panels. The great advantage of APP is that not only does it inform you of insufficient memory, but also suggests the amount of downsizing needed to complete, and then continues and finishes it. With 32gb of RAM pixinsight will probably be sufficient for anything other than really huge ones.

I'll butcher a post on the pixinsight forum with some relevant comments matching my own experience with pixinsight just hanging. Hopefully I'll  be able to successfully share them here.

Cheers and CS,

Ray
