Back in the dim and dark history of this pier, when we still had an OAG fitted and were having problems with the shadow of the prism, we image the Monkey Head Nebula (SH2-252, NGC2174). Because of the strong shadow, you needed to crop aggressively to the nebula.

This is my process of the data:
SHO_Final.jpg

Messing around on Telescopius, realised that you can get the Monkey Head, the Jellyfish (IC 443) and SH2-249 (IC444) into the same frame.

MonkeHeadJellyfish.jpg

There is a lot of background nebulosity in the area, so even though the centre of the frame is a bit empty, I think it makes an interesting composition.

Alternatively, we could make a two-pane mosaic moving the main emission nebulae more to the centre of the image, making sure we capture all of SH2-249 and bringing M35 into view as well.

Jellyfish Mosaic.jpg

I think this is a narrowband image as the main interest is the emission nebulae.

Any thoughts?

Hi Richard,

That's a great suggestion but probably too late. Florent has 3 jobs for the Jellyfish in the queue, the first submitted during September and 2 more recent ones. I'd be keen to capture the Monkey head again now that the prism problem has gone away, so I'd favour a more centralised job. We need to hear from Florent first as it might not be too late to change things and go with a mosaic only. If not, then I'd like a separate job.

Cheers,

Hmm! I looked at Florent's coordinates and they put NGC2174 just too far right to make a mosaic by adding another frame.

I think we should let Florent's jobs run and see what they look like.

Looking forward to hearing from Florent on this.

It looks to me that so far 2 hours of data out of 15 1/2 hours have been captured, so it may not be too late to take a different course with a mosaic. This is entirely up to Florent. If we leave things as they are then I'm still keen on a separate job for the Monkey Head. I have seen a few good images in HOO only, so that could be a first option, with a follow up in S2 time permitting. Personally though, given the star shapes, I've gone right off of mosaics on pier 14 until that reducer is removed next year.

Ray,

This is my HOO from the same data:

ngc2174HOO.jpg

I will have a look at whether we can put the Monkey Head more or less central in the frame and still crop to a mosaic widefield with Florent's job. They are not out by much.

If we move NGC2174 a little to the right, but well out of the way of the edge stars like so:

AltMonkeyHead.jpg

We should be able to get a good image of the Monkey Head, but still have the option of trying to cut a widefield mosaic out fo the two frames.

What do you think?

Hi Richard,

That does work well so I'd be very happy to go with that. It therefore also makes sense to go the full HOS to match the Jellyfish. From someone living in the far calmer eastern side of the country, hope your obs survived the  onslaught of storms battering you recently.

Cheers,

OK - I'll submit that when I have a moment to think about sub numbers and lengths.

Yes, we survived the storms. It was very noisy and a few branches and trees came down on the roads in the area, but we are pretty sheltered by our own plantations. So no damage to house, outbuildings or observatory.

However, after the storm, we had a power cut that lasted two days. Not as bad as they had it in the North-East, but apparently the various failures stressed the local grid so much that it fell over. It was the longest power cut we have had here in thirty years, and it was a reminder how dependent we are on electricity. So definitely PV and a battery next year!

Look out for some suggestions on imaging a bunch of supernova remnants and planetary nebulae in Auriga.

Hi all

i ve submit a job in september for the jellyfish but it is still at 25%, 2H of data . I think this job is lost due to the change in priority system
so i scheduled another 2 part job of the same target but they havent start.   If you want i can cancel both of them of you want to do proper targeting .

My own concern is to split the jobs is several part so we can recover more rapidly the data.  I splt my jobs now in 15/15/15 exposure for SHO , so we can accumulate data over the season and not get a full job only after 4 or 6 months waiting .

As these target are right on the Moon path , they can be shoot only a few day / month .  tell me if you want  me to remove jobs 1372 and 1373. But please consider to split the mosaic jobs

Florent,

No please don't remove those jobs. We can fit around what you already have submitted.

Mosaics are not great with the distortion of the field at the edges. We will be better for mosaics after we have removed the reducer.

As I said to Ray, we can position the Monkey Head nebula to give good data on that target with enough overlap with your image to let us try for a mosaic if we feel it is worth it.

Your point on the moon path is right, so we should not waste any data we have already collected.

I agree with you on splitting jobs into smaller chunks. I have started doing this for more recent jobs.

Hi Florent,

Totally agree with everything that Richard said, and to adopting a policy of splitting jobs up into chunks where appropriate.

When all the jobs associated with those 2 targets have been completed we'll be able to create an image of each object separately, and as Richard has already mentioned, cut a widefield mosaic of both of them. Win, win. :)

Thanks gentlemen and other syndicate members for all those submissions you've been making and keeping the pier occupied.

Cheers and best wishes to you, the staff and all the members for a restful, happy and peaceful festive holiday.
