Dear Syndicate,

I would like to propose a 2-panel mosaic of the Witch Head Nebula.  The main part of the nebula can almost be imaged in one shot, but I am also interested in the extension south, which may people miss due to limited field of view.  I suggest 2 x 8 hours with 300s per sub-exposure, and it would have to be taken when the moon is down, as it is a faint blue reflection nebulae.   What does everyone think?

Nice object Brian, just be mindful of super bright star close by with your framing and sub lengths is my only comment.

I love the witches head !

To be honest i reckon a 4 pane mosaic of the area would be worth considering as there is just some much going on around the witch its breathtaking to see with space around it while using the resolution of the e180 :)

Hi Steve,  Thanks for the advice.  Yes, I will take care to avoid Rigel (but, of course, I may get scattered light into the scope from it).  I would plan failrly long subs (300secs) on the basis I didn't have any bright stars in the frames.  I could go for a four-pane mosaic to include LBN912 and LBN 906, if other folks are happy for me to do so.  I think it would look pretty cool - just like the N1333 mosaic is shaping up to be.

I also though about going North to get LDN1615 - but that would include Cursa which is also a pretty bright star.

If I don't hear anything, I will go ahead and submit for a 2x2 pane with Witch Head and LBN917/LBN906

THanks

Me and Pete can have a play with the data then :)

Hi All,

Thats sounds great.  I have submitted a 2x2 panel mosaic for the Witch Head and surrounding region including LBN 906 and LBN 917.  The pane have a 10% overlap in order to get everything in.  I have avoided Rigal and Cursa - so we don't have any bright stars photobombing the show..

Steve/Phil: Finger trouble led me to stuff up that first three entries for the mosaic - please delete these.  The proper ones are labelled NE, NW, SE and SW.

Cheers

Hi Phil and Steve,

I have just realised that I have made a mistake in my misaiming for the Witch Head - I had the wrong size of sensor (full frame not APS-C).

Pane 1, 05hr 04' 10", -06º 52' 34"
Pane 2, 04hr 54' 45", -06º 52' 34"
Pane 3, 05hr 04' 11", -08º 25' 53"
Pane 4, 04hr 54' 44", -08º 25' 53"

These are the coords that should be used.

I will resubmit the request.

Hi Steve and Phil,

I have just managed to stuff up my new entries for the Wich Head.  Please just delete all and I will start again tomorrow.

Thanks Steve,  More finger trouble.  Could you delete the ones I sent today as well.  Having problem with the form submitting when I press return to go to the next field!

Thanks Steve,  More finger trouble.  Having problem with the form submitting when I press return to go to the next field.

Please delate all entries apart from the ones labelled
Witch Head Top,
Witch Head Middle and
Witch Head Bottom.

In the end, I decided to go with a 3 x 1 mosaic, to get in full length on the Witch Head Nebula.  I couldn't get LBN 917 or LBN986 in a 2x2 mosaic, and I didn't want to go further east and pick up Rigel.  I have used a 15% overlap, and a PA of 355deg.  This is compromise between the 354deg advertised and the 356 deg I have measured.

Hi,
I have requested removal of the mosaic.  Until I actually see some improved data, I think it is just too risky to submit a mosaic which depends on good conditions throughout the panes.
Regards
Brian
