OK. So this is one way we could approach the Sadr region of Cygnus.

Sadr Region.png

Four panels:

Pane, RA, DEC, Position Angle (East), Pane width (arcmins), Pane height (arcmins), Overlap, Row, Column
Center, 20hr 20' 41", 42º 24' 42", 90.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, -, -
Pane 1, 20hr 27' 45", 40º 22' 37", 91.14, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 1, 1
Pane 2, 20hr 28' 13", 44º 25' 03", 91.32, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 1, 2
Pane 3, 20hr 13' 36", 40º 22' 37", 88.86, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 2, 1
Pane 4, 20hr 13' 08", 44º 25' 03", 88.68, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 2, 2

Panels 1 & 3 get you most of the brighter features including NGC6888 - the Crescent Nebula, and the dark dust lane next to Sadr. But I think the image is immensely improved by the filamentous nebulosity in the upper two panels. What do you think Ray?

Hi Richard,

Still not used to the absence of notifications when new posts are added here, so I only become aware of anything new when I log in and visit the warm room. Once you add a reply, you're all set. Sorry, I really must check daily in future.

That is tremendous and gets my vote. That covers pretty well everything that I would have done individually, but with the possibility of a giga-mosaic, should you, your computer and software be up to it. You even take in the area around the Crescent nebula. Fantastic Richard.

Cheers,

Ray

Ray,

I don't know where the switch is, but I get a notification for everything (it seems). Perhaps that is because I comment frequently. Don't know.

Computer and software are up to the mosaic, but not sure if I am :-).

Richard,

I'd settle for 2 horizontal mosaics, both of which would be spectacular. Once completed it's certainly possible that apart from the overall image size a combination of the 2 might not be so bad to attempt. Probably would need a 50 inch monitor to do it justice once completed though. :)

Cheers

Have you ordered that new Threadripper PC yet?

I think you may need one soon with mosaics like this ?

Please ignore my dylexia wherever possible, just be thankful I can control my Tourettes ;)

Things to do, so little time!

We will find out :-). I have no experience in mosaics, so anything could happen! Including frying my PC.

As we are sticking with the reduced focal length for the moment, I have submitted the Gamma Cygni/Sadr Region 4-panel mosaic.
Sadr Mosaic.jpg

Pane, RA, DEC, Position Angle (East), Pane width (arcmins), Pane height (arcmins), Overlap, Row, Column
Center, 20hr 16' 04", 42º 02' 46", -105.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, -, -
Pane 1, 20hr 05' 59", 43º 37' 21", -105.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 1, 1
Pane 2, 20hr 12' 01", 39º 44' 28", -105.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 1, 2
Pane 3, 20hr 20' 25", 44º 20' 30", -105.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 2, 1
Pane 4, 20hr 25' 39", 40º 25' 02", -105.00, 323.40, 215.40, 25%, 2, 2

Jobs - 1019, 1022, 1023 and 1024.

Jobs 1020 and 1021 have no exposures (Doh!) and should be cancelled.

You will note it captures the Crescent Nebula in panel 2

Richard,

Great news, one I'm looking forward to, but haven't dared mention it to my computer yet. I'll bide my time after having thrashed it yesterday.

I'm currently attempting to send you stacks for LDN1235 which was the reason my poor computer was tied up for nearly 7 hours yesterday. After WBPP had created all the interim files, it ended up eating 424 GB of disk space. It was around quarter to midnight when I'd stacked the RGB subs so thought I'd do the luminance expecting it to complete around midnight. It finished at one minute to one o'clock!!

There were so many luminance subs, 367, that it was only doing 634 rows at a time in the 8gb of memory it had allocated itself. Each took around 7 minutes and it had to complete that 10 times because of the 6000 plus rows there are. Never again.

Hence I couldn't possibly put you through that and hope you do receive the data.

Having had a quick look at the data, it could really do with a bit more integration time. I think it can wait for another lifetime if such a thing as reincarnation exists!

Just checked the progress or lack of sending those files via Dropbox and it's still sitting there with a sort of rotating icon and a message to the effect that it's sending something. It's really useful that it doesn't inform you of any progress, such as 1/4 files sent. With no experience of how long it ought to take, I'll leave it for an hour or two before intervening.

Cheers,

Ray

An important fact has been overlooked.
The camera is rotated 90 degrees.
As a result, in right ascension there is an overlap of about 50% but in declination no overlap at all.
So you have to do it again, but with the right camera angle.

Aware of that MIke. Planning to submit new coordinates this evening. This thread was for a mosaic before the change in orientation. The jobs were submitted but not actioned before the changes to the equipment.

So not overlooked, but new jobs not yet submitted ;-)

Here are the results.
Between panel 2 and 4 approximately 50% overlap and the same for panels 1 and 3.

to be honest it's quite difficult to be patient because the results are so impressive even in a relatively short exposure of only 40 minutes.
And you are getting very big photo's, it's like wall paper so big.
The final result will be gorgeous.

Mike,

It's possible that you missed my post titled July and August targets. It was supposed to be a place to discuss what people would like to image around those 2 months. Noone has, so never mind.

In there you will see that I discussed what I'd submitted as test data. The Sadr mosaic was included among others. These were short jobs, so we'd get them back sooner, in order that Richard would be able to establish the exact camera angle. Now as it turns out Steve's idea of vertical differs to our interpretation. We expected a small rotation, about 12 degrees, to rotate it to the vertical, however, it was rotated 78 degrees. Those jobs I submitted were based on what we understood would be done, so the mosaic would have been just about correct. The main reason though for replying is that the job 1042 Sh 2-157 was to establish if both that object, The Lobster Claw and The Cave would fit into a single frame. With the sensor in what we call the vertical/portrait mode there was a good chance it would work and a 2 panel mosaic would definitely have accommodated both nicely. If you look at the actual result, in landscape, you'll see it's very tight. Unfortunately in its current orientation I cannot see a 2 panel mosaic working. Looks like 2 separate jobs. Hopefully from the the data you'll have a better idea of what coordinates to use each one.

Cheers,

Ray

Understood. It is a great set up and can yield fantastic results. As you demonstrated with the beautiful processed images you have posted (I must confess to some jealousy, you seem to get better results out the data than I do).

Anyway, over the next couple of days I have a number of jobs to put in. Let’s fill the pipeline!

Resubmitted as a 4-pane mosaic with new coordinates (jobs 1063 - 1066).

Gamma Cygni Mosaic.jpg

Positioned to get the Crescent Nebula well into the frame as well as the brighter components of SH2-108 the Gamma Cygni Nebula.

We could extend the mosaic both above and below this view to capture more of the nebulosity, but let's get this piece first.
