Glad this section exists since I wouldn't want anyone to falsely associate these images with the excellent genuine ones members have posted.

Peter yesterday posted his rendition of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex. Like many others I've seen on here I'd rush that off to a print shop. In my post I mentioned my disappointment that the images the awards are given to in APOTY (Astronomy Photographer Of The Year) competition these days has evolved. I admit that I'm a fuddy duddy, but I also admire nice nightscape images. Avant Garde does have its place I guess. Several years ago I suspect that Peter's image would have at least made the short list, now I'm not so sure.

I  recently completed stacking the subs I had for ic5068, south of ngc7000. which is only a mono image taken through a h-a filter. Pretty boring and of no need for post processing. I did however espy the possibility of making 2 images from it  that might be considered avant garde. Certainly not of a high enough standard to gain any award.

Attached, unless I mess up again are 2 images, the first one sub accompanied by a stack of aligned images. As it's late I'll post these now and later this morning I'll post the 2 images I saw in the stack, emphasised to highlight them. Having never ever taken an ink blot test I shudder to think how I might have been evaluated by the things I imagine I see.

Take care. The old man of the forum.

No compositing involved, one was just a basic colourisation and the other took just a few minutes longer. Firstly a star mask was extracted and then a range mask, which were then just combined to form the second  image below.
I would hope most people would recognise the first as "Duck in Flight". The second represents "The Past and Present".

If dinosaurs went extinct due to a major climatic change, don't blame us, possibly caused by the effects of the Chicxulub impact with earth, then image 2 could represent a scene from around that time. I believe one theory is that the collision would have resulted in a major temperature drop caused by the dust encircling the globe. If so then briefly they may have experienced snowfall for the first time in their semi-tropical environment. I'd like to think that some dinosaurs may have enjoyed their time on the now snow-covered slopes, perhaps managing to learn to ski using their tail as a kind of rudder.

The image depicts one T-Rex skiing down such a slope, but also you may just pick out from the dust at the top, a shape representing a creature of the future. The shape of the face of a dog looking down and maybe feeling sorry for those that would soon become extinct. The dog may be harder to see.

Doesn't want to add the second image to that post apparently, tried a couple of times! Why is my picture apparently being censored. It's not rude, honest. Spent ages describing it as well! :(

Solution:
Photoshop screwing up the color representation when saving as jpeg.

OMG Ray thats awesome, it takes me back to IR film photography :)
