It's great that you're into photography as that is what will help get you all the embellishments once you've stacked the files, and carried out the post processing specifically designed to tidy up things which the calibration files do not fully correct.

Once a few others log in later you should get some great advice regarding software and videos to watch on YouTube, in addition to their own tips. Being stuck on Windows I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any basic software for you to use, but advice will be coming from more learned members than me. 

What I can say is that you will be pleasantly surprised by what you will have achieved in a short space of time. Atter posting that image you'll receive lots more friendly and helpful advice as I have done, and make good use of
your photographic skills. This site is a great way into this hobby and if you get hooked there is so much choice of equipment, all at very reasonable rates. ( Hope this gets me off of the hook with
Steve A after what I said earlier. )

Yep - what I'm missing is a complete lack of knowledge regarding the workflow! With photos (from RAW) I know how to use levels, curves etc but I'm lacking that basic knowledge here, so any tips, novice videos etc will be gratefully received.

I need some tips on typing, I'm sure I just accidentally deleted my reply halfway through.   Try again.

You don't adjust the initial light frames apart from calibration, the adjusting takes place on the stacked image which should be a colour one. 

As Steve said this pier has a osc camera with a Bayer matrix as there are in cameras. The camerashelpfully debayer our images into jpeg and/or raw images though. In the software you are using there ought to be an option to automatically debayer. There may be a box against the abbreviation CFA, colour filter array, if so tick it. Should it then ask for the matrix format, select RGGB. At the end you ought to have a coloured image to work with. Apologies if this does not work for some reason. 

There are some free applications to tidy then stretch that image, others can advise hopefully. After that and then converting it from its linear state to a nonlinear one, your photography software of choice will be able to give final some tweaks.

An honest typing error. Should have read younger and handsomer.

Now relativity comes into play here. One Steve may be 39 and the other 40, hence one is younger. Regarding looks, that's subjective. George Clooney Steve, or, Bruce Willis Steve. Take your pick.
