I love all the lovely nebulosity around Alnitak and down Orion's sword and have seen some stunning narrowband images of various parts of that area.

Looking on Telescopius we can go all the way from the flame/horsehead to M42 in one frame.

So a couple of questions:
  • Given the fact that the sensor is pushing the available image circle to the limits (cf problems with the OAG prism) is it asking for trouble to push the main parts of the image so far to the corners? Would it be better to get two separate images?[/*]
  • When doing M42 with a colour CMOS camera in the past, I have always gone the HDR route. Would we need to do the same with narrowband? If so, does anyone have a feeling for what exposures we require to stop the Trapezium area of M42 burning out?[/*]

As long as your sensor angle is correct which one would presume it is :)

Then why not do a test batch as the camera itself has from memory 14 stops dynanic range so is pretty flexible

180s top as the area is bright so I doubt it needs 300s
240s top as the area is bright so I doubt it needs 300s
30s test shot
45s test shot
60s test shot

Maybe, do some test shots to see how the core itself is handled and 2 different longer exposures (30mins of each as you are not wasting the data then) HA Filter

As For the corners, in my opnion its worth doing the dance and giving it a try :)
