Hi All,

We now have the first two adjacent panels of the initial 3 x 3 mosaic planned for the whole Orion Nebula and Barnard's Loop. Panels 18 and 23 (Panel 18 is labelled 10 in the list of datasets - an error on my part). We have a couple of other panels, but they only touch at corners so I haven't used those yet.

The attached is a very early process - just to see if things are working out.

Each panel was stacked followed by DynamicBackgroundExtraction, HDRComposition (60 and 240 sec masters) PhotometricColorCalibration (because I haven't got the new spectral version working yet), EZ Denoise, and forming the mosaic using MosaicByCoordinates and PhotometricMosaic. Finally, a MaskedStretch to see what we have.

No other processing or enhancements, so in principle a lot more to come.

As you can see the Trapezium is saturated. We could do another run at 15 or 10 secs to dig that detail out if you think it is worthwhile.

But apart from that, are you content with the data we are getting? Are you happy to let the rest of the 3x3 mosaic continue (panels 11-13, 16-18, 21-23), or should we abandon the project or gather more data?

As we now have 8 out of the 9 panels of our initial 3x3 mosaic, I have done a quick process to see what we have.

I omitted the left-hand column, which is mostly Barnard's loop, as that includes the incomplete panel 21. So this 2x3 mosaic is panels 12, 13, 17, 18, 22 & 23.

There is a lot more detail to pull out, but this is currently limited by variations in the overall colour and background levels of some panels. Panel 13 is particularly problematic and, as @Macdonald noted, seems noisier than the rest of the panels. I may resubmit that panel for additional data.

However, I think we have a nice image already, and those with greater processing skills will be able to pull more detail out of the murk.

You can download the full size jpg here if you want to examine more critically Orion2x3.jpg.

Sure, my process for this mosaic was:

- DBE all panels
- ImageSolver script on all panels
- MosaicByCoordinates script
- PhotometricMosaic script with combination mode of `Average`. I started with the middle panel.

Thanks very much

A very similar process except:

  • I did an EZ Denoise on each panel after the DBE
  • Used TrimTiles (10 px per edge) after MosaicByCoordinates
  • Used the blend mode in PhotometricMosaic
  • Started with teh bottom panel (M42) and bult upwards. That may be the mistake. I did it because M42 is the strongest nebula signal.

Anyway, will try and reproduce what you have done when I get a moment. Unfortunately, I have to do some work for the rest of today. Not quite retired yet!

Here's a rough mosaic of the 3 panes. Pane 13 (the top pane) looks a lot noisier than 18 and 23, perhaps we need a little bit more data on pane 13.

Thanks very much for this draft mosaic.

Well that's a LOT better than I did. I think that is good enough as a test of the data. Mine had a very obvious transition (like a bloody great stripe across the mosaic).

I think I must have made an error in assembling the mosaic. Either I pre-processed the individual panels wrong or put the mosaic together in the wrong order (sometimes mosaics are very sensitive to the sequence you use to stitch the panels together).

Could you possibly remember the main processing steps and the order in which you stitched the panel? It would help me figure out what I did wrong.

What is important is that your work shows we can at least get a reasonable mosaic from the data. My failure to do so is my incompetence!

(This was using PhotometricMosaic in PixInsight)

Hi Richard,

This is something I will work on in the future and most likely in one go when all the 9 panels are available. For this larger mosaic I'd probably use APP which I'm renting for a year, after a recommendation by Manuel. It's a lot easier and enabled me to assemble a large mosaic which PixInsight would not do, due to the fact I only had 16GB of RAM.

The solution would have been to make a guess at the amount of downsampling required on each of the panels and then see if it completed with my restricted amount of RAM. A bit of trial and error to establish the amount of downsampling would be required, something which APP automatically calculates and then does automatically for you. This mosaic should not to be a problem in pixinsight processing this 'tiny' 3x3 mosaic. :)

Unless within the next few days you get a reply which solves your problem, or, you find a solution yourself, I'd recommend resubmitting that job either completely or maybe with just half of the subs. There doesn't appear to be that much in the queue anyway.

This should be a great mosaic as it includes lots of interesting stuff.

Cheers,

Ray

Those of you paying attention will have noticed that panel 13 (which we already have) completes the right-hand column of our 3x3 mosaic. The reason I have not posted the complete column yet is that I am struggling to add panel 13 into the 18/23 mosaic.

Not sure whether this is clumsy handling on my part, or whether there is a problem with the panel 13 dataset.

If anyone has a draft mosaic of 13,18 & 23 without a very visible boundary between the panels, could you post it and the processing sequence that you used. I have a feeling it may be something to do with the sequence of operations in building the mosaic. I am going to try out a different assembly sequence, but if that fails, we may need to resubmit one of the panels.

Hi,

From my point of view and as I joined only 1 month ago, i'm missing 80% of the panels (only have P11, P13, P23 & P10). So I'll never be able to build the final picture.

Nicolas

Your query has already been answered by others. Don't worry, you are in good shape.

If you ever miss a panel of a mosaic, or a resubmit of a job to fill a data gap, just ask the rest of the syndicate. Someone will be able to help you out. I sometimes can't download a set of subs, because I am busy or miss the time window, and I have always been able to find a way around it with the support of friends here.

Richard I too agree that we should carry on and at the very least to complete the first stage.

Nicolas, I see that Darius has already mentioned that you have all the panels collected so far. In the Nexus tab along the top, select Syndicate area then View submissions. If you look at the submission list for pier 5 you'll see every job that has been submitted. All completed and downloaded jobs are highlighted in blue and have a tick mark as well. All your own uncompleted jobs are highlighted in green and you will see the option to have any of your own jobs removed by the team should you wish to do so. I hope this helps.

So good news. Thanks for the clarification :)

Hello Nicolas,

only these four panels have been taken so far. The others still need to be recorded. I am satisfied with the first results. I think we can continue the mosaic as planned.
