I have been monitoring syndicate piers and have noticed lots of large mosaics being submitted, whilst we don't have an issue with mosaics in the slightest, we do feel its time Roboscopes set some boundaries so its fair to all users.

From now on if any user wishes to place a multi pane mosaic job there must be a consensus of opinion by the majority of members for it to be placed in the pier queue. Resources are finite and I feel this needs putting in place so all members get the most of of their syndicate membership.

After putting up your suggestion, if after 3/5 days you have had zero responses or heckling, then go ahead and place your job request regardless :)

What constitutes a mosaic is a data sets over two panes eg 3x1, 2x2, 3x3 5x5 etc etc

Mosaics can be very rewarding when the right subject is picked but time of year and sky placement needs to be taken into account, something that setting quickly or not above horizon limits for extended periods would not be good candidates. Our wet seasons are also not the best times for ambitious projects because of the unpredictability of sky conditions. having a half finished project at the end of the season through incorrect or over ambitious planning would be a huge shame for all pier members.

Useful suggestions you can state in your proposal:

  • Main subject & peripheral objects in the frame
  • How many panes
  • Hours per pane
  • Total amount of hours
  • An image with the mosaic panels and intended objects that corresponds with the camera angle
  • An idea of why the mosaic is being proposed, so other members understand your vision with the proposal and why its a great idea. Integrated flux, dark nebulas, combining two great subjects are some of the wonderful reasons for doing mosaics!

Common sense must always prevail however!

For example, you may find imaging vast swathes of near empty space surrounding a object in the middle of the frame interesting but other member may find this boring and a waste of pier resources without a compelling proposal :)

This applies to Piers 1 2 3 5 & 14
