Hi,

Duplicated job and jobs being done out of sequence. This ought to be a cause for concern as imaging time is precious.

The target which is drawing most attention is Wr134. This was originally submitted in March by Florent. In July this was submitted by Hoi but using slightly different coordinates.

Duplicates can be difficult to avoid and may occur due to the use of different catalogue names, or, when the original job was submitted months earlier, a roboscopes recommendation, and therefore easily missed by the person making the new submission.

The latter job has very recently been completed and has now drawn attention to focus issues. Inevitably this will result in more valuable imaging time being required to satisfactorily complete the job. A very necessary submission for retakes has been made. In the meantime many other narrowband targets submitted months ago lie dormant.

So what will receive the highest priority over the next month?

The retake job, the job submitted in March, jobs being submitted right now, or, those lying dormant?

As a minimum we need to discuss the Wr134 duplication issue and whether this immediately needs actioning.

This job sequence issue will not be solved by revised moon avoidance settings Steve, and I think this will be proved in the coming weeks.

If no one else shares any of these concerns, then that is okay with me.

Cheers,

Ray

I submitted the job for WR134 , but then I found out Florent already did, so I clicked request removal. However, the job is not removed and got done pretty fast. I took a look at the job, there are many out-of-focus frames, so I submitted an amendment.

Anyway, I am fine keeping either job. My thinking is since we have done a job already with some usable frames and the other job is currently at 0%, I would say we should try to amend to the finished job (not because I submitted that one).

Thanks!

Hi Hoi,

I agree with what you're saying, it makes total sense to complete the job you entered first. The outstanding question though is, will we still need the original submission?

That was the only reason for creating this post so's not to end up inadvertently duplicating data. What job was started first is completely in the lap of the gods as it were, the algorithm, nothing any of us can control. You just got 'lucky'. :)

Hoi you are not the only one who has failed to have a job removal request carried out, I also still have one. That was made months ago as the target had set and I wanted to have the small amount already collected downloaded. In the end I decided to just wait for it to start rising again. There is a certain law that sums up what will happen, just when it is about to start to rise then the removal request will be carried out. :)

That long spell of bad weather has caused a large backlog to develop, that's why I think we ought to try and remove any unnecessary duplication. This is not made very easy to do by having to rely on members to keep accessing the forum. A new post can often disappear from the home page very quickly and not be seen, and notifications are not automatically sent to syndicate members.

Hi All

We are on the focus thing as you know

we are not allowed by law to auto subscribe users to a thread I am afraid, they need to tick which I am surprised more do not tick to get the posts from the pier they are subscribed to

Hi Steve,

Okay I wasn't aware about the law thing, but I can understand what most likely is happening.

As to members subscribing, it's like that old saying. "You can lead Steve to a pub, but you can't make him drink!"

You might btw consider investing in some cameras that can cool down to - 60° ambient the way things are going.

Cheers,

Several thoughts on this general topic:

The subscribe option is not obvious. It could do with highlighting for people periodically.

When I make a new submission, I use Control-F to search the list for the same target under catalogue names and common names to see if there are any previous jobs. Then check if they are the same thing or different framing, filters or exposure. I generally look for M, NGC, IC catalogue entries, or the most common designation if it is an LBN, VdB or whatever. It doesn't catch everything but at least gives me a check on obvious duplicates.

I also try to remember to post a screenshot from Telescopius and a comment in the target suggestions thread to show what I am thinking of, or have already submitted. That gives colleagues an opportunity to point out a duplicate or comment on how the job could be improved. I think it would help if we all did this more regularly.

An inevitable consequence of the syndicate structure is that members will join at different times and will not have access to what has been done previously. I experienced this when I joined Pier 1. Therefore, we should accept and indeed welcome repeat imaging jobs when new people come on board.

The problem of older jobs seeming to get stuck is something I do not understand, and yet it seems to be real. Somewhere in the algorithms is the answer, but I don't know what is doing it. We can only raise any jobs that do seem to be stuck with the team and hope they can nudge jobs that are not making the progress we should.

The focus issue is annoying, but the suggestion that we need to re-focus more frequently in the summer heat than in winter makes sense. Different parameters for summer and winter.
